About BMW

Bayerische Motoren Werke was founded in 1916 and ever since has had a reputation for building some of the world’s finest sports saloons and high performance engines. BMW engines have powered motorbikes, championship wining race cars and airplanes; its famous emblem contains the blue and white of the Bavarian flag arranged in the style of a spinning propeller. Today it is unusual in standing alone as a manufacturer rather than as part of a bigger group although it was only the voting of smaller shareholders and the workforce which beat a challenge from Daimler Benz in 1959 to take it over.

Now and in addition to its own badged models, BMW owns two of the most famous British brands of all, MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and has invested almost £2  billion here since 2000. The UK is the fourth biggest market in the world for its cars. BMW is active in every sector of the car market from family hatchbacks, crossovers, SUVs, saloons, estates and coupes, high power cars in its M range and the emerging electric car industry with its i3 and i8 as well as plug-in hybrids.

Popular BMW Cars

BMW 1 Series

As the name suggests, the BMW 1 Series is the entry level car to the range and is a three or five door compact hatchback. Engines go from a three cylinder 1.5 litre through to the high performance six cylinder 3.0 litre M Sport models. BMW fits the 1 Series with rims and tyres from 205/55 R16 to 225/40 R18 (front) and 245/35 R18 at the back for the M Sport cars. The 1 Series is available with run-flat tyres for cars on 17 and 18 inch wheels.

BMW 2 Series

The BMW 2 Series introduces more choice in style and purpose because as well as being sold in convertible and two door coupe versions, it is also available as the more family-friendly Active Tourer MPV model. Petrol, diesel and now plug-in hybrid engine technologies are in the range. With 90 variants of the BMW 2 Series, it is not possible to list all the wheel and tyre sizes but to give a flavour, the Active Tourer typically runs on 205/60 R16 and a mid range coupe, such as the 220i model, on 205/50 R17s.

BMW 3 Series

Arguably the best known BMW, the 3 Series has been a sector defining car for about 40 years since the original appeared in 1975 and many say it still leads the field in terms of handling. The BMW 3 Series comes in four versions, the saloon, estate (Touring), the five door Gran Turismo hatchback and the hybrid i Saloon. With such a vast number of variants we cannot list all the tyre and wheel sizes, but the 3 Series starts with 16-inch rims and a typical mid-range saloon will probably have 225/50 R17s. A 320d Efficient Dynamics model runs on 16-inch rims with 205/60 Michelin EnergySaver tyres. BMW will launch an all-new generation 3 Series in 2019.

BMW 4 Series

Aimed at the company car driver the BMW 4 Series fits neatly into the gap between the 3 and 5 Series and is fast becoming a key car for BMW. Sold in coupe, convertible and saloon form, the 4 Series is popular in the fleet and business markets. Critics say it is a perfect marriage between the practicality afforded by having a bit more space than the 3 Series, allied to the smaller car’s handling and agility. Some describe it as the best car in the BMW range. Run flat tyres are specified by BMW, as are reduced rolling resistance tyres for the EfficientDynamics cars.

BMW 5 Series

The latest 5 Series is new but already a multiple award winner with several magazines voting it their Car of the Year. The ‘Business Executive’s Express’ is how the 5 Series is often described and it packs in everything BMW is renowned for. Excellent handling, efficient powertrains and (comparatively) low running costs and in today’s market of course, sophisticated connectivity. Rivals from Lexus, Jaguar, Audi and Mercedes all have strong models but the BMW 5 Series is the newest of them and probably has a slight advantage because of that. Wheel and tyre sizes for the BMW 5 Series range from 225/55 R17s to 275/40 R19s for the M Sport high performance cars.

BMW 6 Series

The BMW 6 Series comes as a convertible, four-door Gran Coupé saloon or the five-door Gran Turismo which is the cheapest of the three body shapes. BMW offers three trim levels to choose from, the SE, Sport and M Sport and while the 6 Series is elegant and sophisticated inside and out, it has been designed to be primarily a four seater but a fifth passenger can be taken on shorter journeys. Run flat tyres are fitted as standard on 18, 19 or 20 inch rims.

BMW X Series

BMW calls its SUVs the X Series cars which start with the little X1 and go through the X2,3,4,5 models up to the X6. Each is closely derived from the hatchback or saloon cars they are based on but as with all SUVs, they are higher and usually slightly heavier so have different driving dynamics and characteristics. SUVs also tend to have bigger wheels and, as an example, the 320d EfficientDynamics saloon runs on 205/60 R16 rubber on 16 inch rims whereas the X3 SUV with the same engine has 225/60 R18s.
